Storm Names Chosen for 2020/2021

The storms for this year and the next have been given a total of 21 names that were suggested by the public. So far, the UK has been hit with a lot of storms and extreme weather conditions. When warning the public of upcoming storms, the Met Office gives the storm a name, but it isn’t always known why they do this.

Why Do we Name Storms?

When a storm has the potential to cause an amber or red warning, it is named to be categorised easily so it can be found. They are often in alphabetical order running from season to season throughout the year.

It also mainly helps to effectively communicate the impacts of major storms. By naming storms, it helps people to become aware and memorise the severe weather events before they hit the UK. To further awareness, the Met Office, the Dutch KNMI and the Irish Met Éireann lets the public decide which names will be used.

Why Have There Been so Many Storms This Year?

Just last month, we were hit with 2 storms, the first being Storm Ellen, and the second being Storm Francis. According to the BBC, this was the first time two storms have been named in August since 2015. This storm brought up to 70mph winds, thunder and torrential downpour. These storms along with the heatwaves in August were extremely strange weather for the UK.

Scientists are looking into if there are any links between climate change and the unusual weather we have been having. Back in February, during storm Dennis, Dr. Michael Byrne, who is the lecturer in climate science at the University of St Andrews stated “the planet being 1C warmer as a whole versus pre-industrial times, every degree means 7 percent more water in the atmosphere and more rain in these heavy rain events.” This statement can also be applied to our torrential weather last month.

What will the Storms do to my Roof?

High winds and torrential rain can be very damaging to roofs of old age. For old roofs, bad weather can lead to fallen debris, leaks in gutters and roofline, or broken/missing tiles. If your roof has been damaged by bad weather, our expert team at Farington Roofing have the solutions for these problems. With over 40 years’ experience, we specialise in all aspects of roofing, from a simple roof repair to a new installation, get in touch with us for a free quotation.

Modern Felt Roofing Techniques

Polyester Roofing Felt is available in a range of colours and styles, traditionally it is more known for use on non-habitable buildings, such as sheds, summer houses, kennels and hutches. Advancements in technology now mean it is suitable for use on any flat roof to your property including garages, outhouses, extensions, conversions, bay windows and much more.

Developments in products including bitumen and modified bitumen technology have resulted in enhanced resistance to UV damage, splitting and cracking. This type of felt roof provides a weatherproof, hard wearing roof in a huge range of different styles and finishes, suitable for any felt flat roof area. Farington Roofing use high-quality, BS compliant, polyester roofing felt which guarantees a durable watertight roof for many years to come.

How often does a felt roof need replacing?

Modern felt roofs can last up to 20 years and more, best quality materials combined with almost 40 years craftmanship means that our roofs are made to last!!!

If your original felt flat roof has failed, we recommend replacing it with a modern felt roof by Farington roofing.

Some signs of felt roof failure include:

Expansion, contraction and exposure to the elements, can cause old felt to lose elasticity

Brittle old felt can form bumps and pool water which freezes and expand and crack

Lifting at the joints or seams joints can be due to poor materials, workmanship, age

Trapped moisture can expand with the heat and lift the felt causing blisters

If your roof is leaking at the join to a wall it could be a case of flashing replacement

Experienced Felt Roofer

With almost 40 years’ experience, Farington Roofing is available in the local areas of Nelson, Chorley, Leyland, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan, Wakefield and more. All roof work undertaken including residential and commercial properties.

A quick news search online reveals the shocking nature of the problem of rogue
roofers across the Northwest. Sadly, this is the case throughout Britain. Here is just
a small selection of news headlines throughout our surrounding area.

Lancs Live – 5th January 2020
“Warning as vulnerable fall victim to ‘aggressive and dishonest’ rogue trader tactics”

Lancaster Guardian – 20th August 2019
“Rogue Lancaster roofer gets 24 weeks jail for fraud and aggressive behaviour
towards pensioner”

Lancashire Telegraph – 15th January 2020
“Rogue trader fleeces £14k out of home-owner for dodgy roof work”

Lancashire Telegraph – 24th January 2020
“Oswaldtwistle rogue trader fined after ‘lower than DIY’ standard work”

Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Warning

These days most roofing companies are trustworthy and top standard however there are many rogue roofers operating in the County. Cowboy builders will often do a bad job on your house and overcharge you for their services. Their work can potentially ruin the foundations of someone’s home and cause bigger problems than what they began with. In Summer 2019, Lancashire County Council Trading Standards issued a warning to local homeowners after a series of incidents regarding roofing work. In a statement that they issued they stated: “There have been reports of bogus roofers operating across the County trying to charge too much for simple work or offering to carry out repairs that are not needed. Paul Noone, head of Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: “We’ve had several alerts relating to door-to-door sellers. These include traders using pushy sales tactics or recommending work that just isn’t needed.”
Roof work does come at a price. When you consider how important the job that your roof plays in protecting your family home or business property this means that any maintenance
that is made to your roof should be done correctly and by a fully qualified and insured company or roofer. When using the services of a rogue roofer you put yourself at risk of double the payout and ruining your home.

How can you Identify and Avoid a Rogue Trader

Most cowboy builders will scout out your house and come door to the door indicating to you that there is a problem with your roof and how their company can fix it and the price it will cost. We advise not to do business with anyone who comes to your door and offers their services on the spot, may it be roofers or any other rogue tradesmen. There are multiple reasons for this advice and they are:
● If you verbally agree to a price on the doorstep, then there is no written statement of the price and have no argument against when the price starts to increase once work has begun.
● With rogue traders they don’t give you the opportunity to contact other companies to get quotes or to see if the price that has been given to you is reasonable and inline with other companies.
● A door to door roofer is impossible to track down once finished due to the giving of fake names and normally no company logo on the van that they work from. This causes problems due to after the work is done you can’t contact or locate the person that did the work.
● Rogue roofers often target the most vulnerable clients such as the elderly who live alone. They can be very manipulative and intimidating, this then scares people into thinking that the work needs to be done asap.

Steps you can Take to Avoid a Rogue Trader
If you have an elderly or vulnerable relative, friend or neighbour who lives alone, it is a good idea to double-check with them that anyone hasn’t tried talking them into any work on their residence. If you do believe that a scam has happened to someone you know then you can report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.

You can also check the trader’s details if you have them on google beforehand to see if they have any previous reviews from customers. Make sure you always seek quotes from other companies and also make sure that everything if agreed is written down and signed by the trader and yourself.

A general rule to follow when it comes to your roof is-if you have a leak, then you have a problem!

There are several factors that can contribute to roof problems:

Age of roof

Every roof has a projected lifespan, this will vary depending on the considerations such as weather conditions and materials used. Age is one of the most common factors that affects a roofs lifespan. yet it is one that many homeowners often overlook. If your roof is starting to look a little old and tired, it may be time for an upgrade.

Lack of Maintenance

Every roof needs regular maintenance – especially after bad weather. For example, slates and tiles can slip, crack or come loose and ridge tiles may need repointing. You should always use an experienced roofing contractor to make sure the work is completed to a professional standard.

Poor Ventilation or Insulation

If your roof space is badly ventilated, it could lead to problems. Poor ventilation can cause a build-up of heat and moisture which is trapped with nowhere to go. In turn, this can weaken the roof structure or cause damage to the roof surface and internal structure.

Failed Lead Flashing

Flashing acts as a seal between the vulnerable joints of the roof, helping to keep water out and preventing leaks. If your flashing has deteriorated, or has been installed incorrectly, water can enter your roof and potentially cause damage over time.

Poor Installation

Faulty workmanship is one of the biggest causes of problems and reduces a roofs life expectancy. This tends to be one of the more common reasons for troubles that crop up at some point in the life of the roof.

Why is it Important to Maintain Your Roof?

It protects you, your property and your belongings 24/7. But how often do you think about your roof?

Your roof protects your property against wind, rain, snow, hail and heat. Your roof is subjected to harsh northern weather and elements which can contribute to its damage and deterioration over the years-more so if your roof is not in good condition.

The main cause of roof problems is a poorly maintained roof. Your roof is one of the most critical parts of your building and requires regular inspection, maintenance and repair. Roof damage can happen from noticeable events like wind, snow, hail and falling tree branches. Obvious damage can often be spotted from the ground, but sometimes a roof survey is the best way of monitoring the condition of your roof.

If regular roof maintenance is overlooked the lifespan of your roof may be reduced. With proper maintenance, your roof can last for many years, it can out last you, depending on the materials and workmanship.

Why is roof maintenance important?

Increases the lifespan of your roof-It good practice to have a regular roof inspection

Kerb appeal- a well maintained roof increases your property value and saleability

Faulty gutters -do not drain properly, a major cause of damp issues

Roof mould and algae- can prematurely age your roof

Roof maintenance saves you money-emergency roof work can be costly

Maintenance can resolve minor problems before they become huge problems

Peace of mind-you do not need to worry about your roof if it is well maintained
